In today’s article I’m going to highlight some of what I’m looking forward to with Covert Missions. I tried to stick to cards/interactions that haven’t received a lot of hype so far, so hopefully this will give you some new ideas! I think there are a lot of good cards in this set that could have an impact on the Worlds meta, and I’ve enjoyed theory crafting over the past few weeks. Hope you enjoy!
1. Valorous Tribe + Admiral
For the most part, successful Admiral decks have been decks with a big character that can survive for a long time, allowing you time to draw into Admirals and pull off the big plays (Palp/Motti and Yoda/Bail are the best examples). Few cards provide more survive-ability than Valorous Tribe. I’ve gotten in a few games with this kind of deck, and the theory seems to hold – the decks are very difficult to kill and you almost always get off the big Admiral play. My favorite lineups at the moment are Mace/Kashyyyk Warrior and Tarful/Yoda1.
2. Valley of the Dark Lords
I love fast decks and impactful battlefields, and Valley of the Dark Lords has me intrigued. It’s a hard counter to Admiral decks, and could also give big supports like Vader’s Fist and Shadow Caster a hard time (Shadow Caster less so because of TLT, but still). Decks that rely primarily on big character dice should immediately consider this as a battlefield. Reylo is the one that comes to mind right now, as it doesn’t care much about it’s upgrade dice, and could really use some protection from big supports. Plus, a scary battlefield like that may force more opponents to give Reylo the shields – a big win for that deck.
3. Pilot Mitigation Suite
If you’re running two pilots in a Hero Red/Yellow or Rainbow color suite, your top mitigation options looks like:
- Eject, Flanked by Wingmen, Loth-Cat and Mouse, Easy Pickings, Flee the Scene, Jump to Lightspeed
That is an amazing, super high upside removal suite. I’m not convinced that there will be a Tier 1 piloting deck (*cough* DM *cough*), but if there is, it’s going to be because the removal suite is a complete blowout.
4. Coaxium Heist
Coaxium Heist is just plain fun – I had an opportunity to play it in a build a box and it was a blast! I’m not sure it will end up being standard playable, but you can bet I’m going to give it a shot! I love two kinds of characters for this plot – those that benefit from Bounties (because it gives you a cheap character to kill), and those that get extra dice in the pool after a kill (giving you a higher chance of triggering the plot after killing the Pyke). One character fits both those criteria – the new Boba Fett. So the first Coaxium Heist deck I’m going to roll out is likely to be some sort of 3 wide Boba deck – Boba/Executioner/Sentinel Messenger?
5. Stealing your Money
Multiple characters in this set have money stealing abilities – a super strong mechanic. Kragan Gorr has already gotten some hype, and rightly so – he’s got big sides and his ability is going to be a pain to play against. But another character I love from this set is the Nar Shaddaa Thief. His ability is a bit harder to trigger, but he’s got a couple things going for him. One, exhaust abilities literally have no downside with him – cards like Respite and Into the Garbage Chute are just straight value. Two, there are going to be some sneaky ways to get his ability off; Ewok Ambush into steal could really catch your opponent off guard, and any sort of expensive ambush card will give you the opportunity to steal with your ambush action. And three, he’s a scoundrel, giving an extra bonus to an Entourage package and allowing you to play Mean Streets (Vader?).
6. Delving in Hero Decks
Qi’Ra has always been a favorite of mine, because of flexibility in deck building she provides. For the most part, a lot of the best cards yellow cards have been hero – bringing Flee the Scene and Easy Pickings into Villain is pretty good value. Delve is another very good yellow card, but heroes simply haven’t had enough big stuff to get the value you need. Not anymore! Adding Rebel Hanger to the 6 cost Falcon gives you two pretty huge Delve options in Hero. Maybe there’ll be some sort of Falcon/X-Wing Qi’Ra Delve deck that works? We’re probably talking just fun tier here, but still – sounds like a blast to me!
