After all of the rebalancing everyone has been left guessing what to play. Palp got hit, Palp’s friend got hit(Watto), and hero mill got hit(No Answer). Standard now becomes one of the most intriguing formats of Destiny, if it wasn’t already. Going forward Vader is one character I feel is worth revisiting. Vader has been asleep way too long. Red Vader has already started making names for himself in an infinite GQ and now is the time to let him loose in standard. Choosing between FOST and battle droid is personal preference. FOST has the better die but Battle Droid allows for Retribution. I personally like battle droid, but I’ll let you decide.
So why Vader?
Honestly Vader has been sleeping too long. He dominated the meta before Convergence and has been nonexistent since. Fighting Pit is probably the most perfect battlefield for Vader and red villain has become the best faction available. Being able to best defense a Battle Droid is just gross and cards like Respite, Forsaken, and Sinister Peace really help your game state. The meta right now has become super dependent on battlefield but Vader doesn’t care. Yes, Fighting Pit is nice, but two shields on Vader is just as nice. Vader offers a good roll off that you don’t get from Phasma, who is a staple post balance. Two best defense gives you a 21 health Vader. Add in any combination of Tactical/Seize the Day/ID10/ or Probe and now Vader’s dice not only guarantee two damage with Retribution they come fully stocked with unmitigable damage. Vader is one of the only characters that can put pressure one two wide decks while also scaring wide decks with fear and dead men.
Where has he gone?
Vader really never disappeared. The addition of Megablaster, Entourage, and Phasma has been too fun to ignore, so it makes sense that players are trying those decks out. You add in new Palpatine, and you can understand why Vader vanished. Players will always try to configure new deck that break the meta and rightfully so. Snoke’s unholy trinity was easily the best deck in the meta so why #$%& around. Snoke has finally been balance the way he should have been initially. He’s still really good, but the days of first turn fists has been nerfed, thankfully. But now it’s time to pick up the old Vader. His 15 HP and hard to mitigate dice present a unique difficulty for your opponents, and he should definitely be seeing more play than he currently is.
What’s the best list?
Vader is a very open character in terms of build around. You can play speed, power, or even hand control with all the red cards. Above is the deck list that I will be running at my local events here in Minnesota. A lot of the cards are interchangeable, so I expect a lot of people to disagree, but that’s what makes Destiny fun. Disagreements, personal preference, and playstyle are everything. Let me know how you feel about this list and please tell me if you think Vader is a lost cause.
