Today we’re taking a look at a top heavy, but extremely tanky deck.
For our battlefield of choice we’re taking Docking Bay. It’s unlikely to help many decks, while the potential Honor Guard loop is a scary upside for your opponent to deal with.
So here’s the list:
So what is the point of the deck? Well it’s meant to create an unstoppable Obi-Wan. Rose has 2 resource sides that will help us to ramp early. Obi already has 12 health and a 1 shield boost every activation, but add to this 2 Shotos, and unless our opponent is running serious shield hate, Obi isn’t dying. But wait, it gets better, if we can play a Leadership turn 3 + not only are we going to deal a significant amount of damage, but we get all those free shields again. The strength of top heavy decks has always been that it is hard to kill their high hp character, and thus they typically get first kill and a dice advantage in mid game. Obi-Wan may be the best character at doing this, with two 3 sides for high damage while also having insane hp gain over the course of the game.
Let’s take a look at our upgrade suite. For two drops we’re rather lacking, with just Ancient Lightsabers and Shoto Lightsabers. However, playing one of our three drops is easy between Rose rolling her special, or simply drawing a Reaping the Crystal. For three drops we have Heirloom Lightsabers, 1 Obi-Wan’s Lightsaber, and 1 Rey’s Lightsaber. In addition we have a single Lightsaber Pull, so that is another 2 drop option for turn one, or it can help us grab the specific three drop we want. While that’s only 8 (9 with pull) dice, we do have R2-D2. The reason I’m running R2 isn’t simply because we are running Docking Bay. I believe the worst part of the deck is its roll reliance, with only a 33% chance at Obi’s melee sides, and the 3 for free side is significantly better than the 3 for 1. R2-D2 offers another 33% chance at hitting that 3 for free side, and at 1 (or free with claim), it’s one of our cheapest options at focus, while also not taking up an upgrade slot. Additionally it can special chain with Obi-Wan’s Lightsaber.
Moving on to our defensive suite, it should be quite solid. We have plenty of options: Crash Landing, 1 Heroism, Guard, Field Medic, Unbreakable, Honor Guard, and 1 Suppression Field. Crash Landing, Guard, and Heroism are all free and great for turn one, redirecting damage onto our support character, Rose, or in Guard’s case removing that 3 for 1 side to remove 3 dice. Unbreakable is strong with the automatic shields of the deck, or for just hitting special sides. Honor Guard and Suppression Field are both solid with Docking Bay. Suppression field is a card I’m still uncertain about. Ideally we can use it to remove the weak sides of characters, so when Baby Vader rolls that 1 ranged side, we can remove it while placing little damage on the card. Rose special can then help us eke out perhaps an additional usage of the card, but eventually with 2 already on it, we can remove a high side and say goodbye the card. As long as we get 3 dice out of it it I think it will definitely pay out, it’s just the upfront deposit of money that has me second guessing it. All this removal wouldn’t be too stellar, but once we consider how many shields we will be generating, Obi-Wan should be safe enough.
Finally we have our offensive cards. Synchronicity is a no-brainer when we consider the sides Obi-Wan has are perfect for it. While I’ve grown to dislike Riposte, (it cannibalizes your own hp), with Leadership and double Shoto Obi-Wan being a possibility, it seems like we need to make use of those Shoto shields somehow. Finally, we have Leadership, which will be quite brutal for your opponent to deal with. Un-tapping a 5 die Obi is going to feel insane, and I can’t wait to do it.
So what do you think? I’ve tried many Leadership decks in the past, but found that in some games you simply lose your big character too early. Will Obi-Wan’s natural survivability, coupled with Shoto finally produce a viable Leadership deck? Or am I being too optimistic? Anyway, hope you enjoy playing the deck.
